He studied Theology and
philosophy in Chieri – Turin (Italy). Specialization: Licence in
literature and philosophy. He was a teacher of Latin, Greek, he also was
the teacher of mathematics in the Albanian pontifical seminary were he
was head master (Rector) in 1945.
He was arrested on the night
of the 31 December 1945, after singing “Te Deum – We praise you o God”,
together with Fr. Giovanni Fausti. He was sentenced to death on the 22
February 1946. He was shot and killed in Shkodër on the 04 March 1946 on
Monday a 5 am. Other information: He was an honest priest and very
zealous, he was very respected by all. His defence attorney (Advocate)
Kole Dhimitri, during the trial, said to the Judges, “If you sentence
these two priests (Fr. Daniel Dajani and Fr. Gjon Fausti), you will add
two martyrs to the Catholic church and hatred towards yourself”.
After they sentenced him to
death, other prisoners, close to his room, out of respect didn’t sing
that night as they use to do other nights. But Fr Daniel through a whole
which others had made with a nail said, why are you not singing tonight,
like you did other nights? With a low voice they answered. “How can we
sing while you have been sentenced to death? Then Fr. Daniel gives them
courage while saying”. Sing sing, otherwise you will please the
communists”.
His last words were: “I
forgive all those who have done wrong to me. I am pleased that I am
dying innocent and without fault. My parents or my relatives should give
money to Fr. Zef Shllakut to offer two Massers”. He was shot and killed
outside the cemetery on Remaj in Shkodër and there they buried him.
