From the moment of arrest (1946) and of the execution (1948) of Mons. Frano Gjini.

Religious Institution: She was a postulant of the Franciscan Sisters (Stigmatine). She returned home, because the Communists had closed down their Institution.

She studied: With Franciscan Sisters (Stigmatine) in Shkodra.

She was teacher at Sang in Mirdite in Nderfushaz.

She was imprisoned and tortured in Shkodra on the 11 August 1949.

While she was dying she asked to die outside prison. Her request was accepted and they sent her to a civil hospital where she died 5 or 6 days after she was transferred from prison on the 24 October 1950.

Other information: She prayed very much and she was very courageous and a great fighter. To go to Holy Mass in Geziq she had walk 6-7 kilometres on foot.

In Song besides the teaching subjects, she taught Catholic doctrine. She was very careful to provide for the children all the school equipment; this was frequently done by paying from her own pocket.

She was arrested, because she was part of the Gjonmarkaj family, she was accused of having conspired to kill Bardhok Biba on the (07 August 1949), who was the Secretary of the Communist party of Mirdite and the parliamentary deputy.

A fierce revenge was taken for this killing so that about 300 people arrested among them was only one woman who was Maria. She was 21 years old.

The rest of the family: Father, mother and her sister Liza, were deported to Tepelene (South Albania). We have to remember that in all Albania Mirdita is the only region whose population is completely Catholic. Because of this the persecution in Mirdite was very cruel.

Among other tortures it was said that Maria was put in a sack where they had up a wild cat and after they had tied the sack, they beat her unmercifully.

Her remains are in Shkodra in the Stigmatine Sister’s Church.
